Ancient Pottery: She haunts my walls
Jason Blue Lake Medicine Eagle Martinez
January 6th - February 4th, 2024
Opening Reception | Saturday, January 6th 6-9 PM

Entering Ancient Pottery: She haunts my walls, a memorial altar sits below a window to the right. A large painting looms at its center, with various small drawings, ephemera, and devotional objects on each side. Since the passing of Jason’s partner Dina, the work shown here celebrates and mourns their collaborative energies, melding the worlds of Bunny & Kitty (Dina & Jason’s nicknames). Imagery of both animals appear throughout the show. Each work feels like a shard of a larger world filled with ritual, darkness, playfulness, and morbidity.

Jason is a spiritual artist. His work is a rigorous practice of interconnected religious symbols from ancient and modern belief systems. At the heart of this practice is his Native Puebloan upbringing, the symbolism and design of which is seen throughout this show. There are handmade Kachina dolls, images of Kachina clowns, and traditional Pueblo patterns. But this imagery is seamlessly woven into a tapestry which includes Christianity, Kabbalah, Wicca, Greek Mythology, and Black Metal. His canvases are also varied: handsaws, a lace doily, cardboard, transparent slides, printer paper.

All of these elements exemplify Jason’s genuineness as an artist. He chooses to share with the viewer. He shares his deeply held beliefs and his experience of loss. The names of his loved ones, and the visual symbols of them, are as important to this work as the globally-shared religious images. In this spirit, Jason has priced the artworks starting at $50. He has also made merch which starts at $2. To experience Jason’s world is to walk away with a piece of it.
